This is a Chinese dish that has a hint of spice to cut through the smoky-sweet combination of black dates and sweet potatoes. Black dates are jujubes that have been smoked and dried; you can find them at Chinese grocery stores. If you can’t find black dates, use prunes or pitted dates. Fermented black bean paste is also available at Chinese grocery stores.
